Barnes Healthcare was started in 1909 by Mr. Barnes’ grandfather. Charles W. Barnes Sr. was a pharmacist and founded the retail pharmacy located in Valdosta, Georgia where he and his wife operated the family business. Mr. Barnes’ father Charles W. Barnes Jr., also a pharmacist, took over the business in December of 1945. It was a typical retail pharmacy of the era with over-the-counter drugs, a soda fountain, greeting cards, etc. In 1946, he started the HME business with oxygen, wheelchairs, and hospital beds. He and his wife enjoyed operating the business until 1976.
Charlie W. Barnes III, also a pharmacist, received an undergraduate degree in Business with a Major in Accounting from Emory University (1964 to 1968). He graduated from the University of Georgia Pharmacy School in 1975 and was licensed as a pharmacist on March 15, 1976. He assumed the leadership of Barnes Healthcare Services in 1976. He expanded into the infusion business in 1983 and into the rehab business in 1988. In 1992 he opened the first office outside of Valdosta in Tallahassee, Florida.
Mr. Barnes proudly served in the Army during the Vietnam war (1968 to 1972) as a helicopter pilot achieving the rank of Captain. He was stationed in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972. He has two children, son Charles W. Barnes IV, daughter Ellen; and two grandchildren.
Charles (Charlie) Barnes, IV, is the next generation of Barnes Healthcare Services, a family-owned, regional home care company currently in its fourth generation of leadership. Charlie attended Valdosta State University and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Before that time, he worked part time in the business, learning it from the ground up. Since then he has worked in leadership roles across the company including General Manager, Business Unit Leader, EVP of Operations and Finance, and is now currently serving as CEO of the organization.
Karen Butterton provides extraordinary results leading and guiding organizations. She is an expert in the Affordable Care Act and the future changes to the healthcare industry. She has over 15+ years in senior executive leadership positions. Karen has excelled in turning around underperforming organizations and capitalizing on new growth opportunities. She has worked in the hospital, assisted living, specialty infusion services, respiratory services, specialty pharmacy, oncology centers and the homecare arena. She has been employed with companies such as: National Medical Enterprises, Total Pharmaceutical Care, Apria, Alterra, VACO Consulting, Air Liquide Global Healthcare, Liberty Medical and currently is serving as the Chief Operations Officer for Barnes Healthcare Services. Career achievements include the ability to drive the development, commercialization, and delivery of new products and programs into the medical marketplace via strong marketing, sales-leadership and operational delivery expertise. She successfully analyzes any organization's critical business drivers, identifies deficiencies and potential opportunities, develops innovative and cost-effective solutions for enhancing competitiveness, increasing revenues, improving customer service offerings and increasing EBIDTA. Karen attended Whittier College, and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she also is a Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt.
Marlene McLennan has accepted the role as Chief Financial Officer Barnes Healthcare Services effective February 2016. She is responsible for providing financial and strategic guidance, strong fiduciary responsibility and accountability, timely and accurate financial statements, ongoing cash flow management, oversight, growth, and success of all strategic, accounting, and financial operations.
Seasoned with start-up companies, facility turnarounds, mergers & acquisitions, as Chief Financial Officer, she oversees the financial and strategic growth functions for Barnes Healthcare Services, and will be improving efficiency on processes at Barnes Healthcare Services. Focusing on financial, strategic development and bottom line improvement, her experience in healthcare finance and operations brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the company. She will continue to develop the organization along with Executive Leadership and Management.
Prior to Barnes, McLennan served as Chief Financial Officer of a top 10 Behavioral Health Organization in Oregon with 900+ employees– she was in charge of $60M+ budget with multi-source revenue streams. While in Oregon, McLennan successfully implemented the benchmarks and financial platform for a $22M capital project, developed new compensation plans focused on staff retention and a succession model, and assisted in implementing a $3.5M attainable capital campaign platform.
Prior to that Ms. McLennan served 3 years in Middle Georgia with Monroe County Hospital as their Chief Financial Officer. With full fiduciary and strategic responsibilities. McLennan also has worked in a dual capacity as Chief Financial Officer for Knox County Hospital, and as Divisional Controller for the corporate managing entity Pacer Health by overseeing 6 additional facilities. As CFO for Knox County Hospital, McLennan within a 15 month period increase net revenues by 58%. During this time, McLennan successfully converted all facilities into the new company’s management structure and turned around losses from $2.7 million a year to $1.3 million per year in less than six months.
Marlene holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami, and an undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Florida.
Robert Steedley is the Chief Clinical Officer at Barnes Healthcare Services, headquartered in Valdosta, Georgia. He is a seasoned healthcare executive with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare.
Prior to joining Barnes Healthcare Services in January 1996, Robert spent many years in the pre-hospital – EMS system while also serving as a Registered Nurse in the emergency room, ICU and CCU. During these same years, Robert and his family started, operated, and sold a highly successful home health agency as well as a private ambulance service.
After joining the Barnes Healthcare Services team as the Director of Nursing Services, Robert progressed and worked in other capacities as General Manager, Director of Sales, Chief Operating Officer, and now as Chief Clinical Officer. In his tenure at Barnes he has crafted advancing sales and operations models that have propelled the organization forward, realizing the vision of the Barnes family of “Taking Care of People”.
Robert has also served the Homecare sector of the healthcare industry through many advocacy roles. From 2013 – 2015, Robert served as the Chairman of the Board for the American Association of Homecare. During his tenure as Chairman, Robert oversaw the lobbying and regulatory efforts on Capitol Hill including introduction and passage of legislation to improve homecare. To this end, Mr. Steedley has also testified before the subcommittee on Health for the Ways and Means committee in the House of Representatives.
Robert graduated from Valdosta High, studied business at Valdosta State University and obtained his degree in Nursing at Columbia State. He has also studied and completed leadership courses in Six Sigma and LEAN at Villanova University.
Becky Pitts is a seasoned professional and currently serves as the Assistant Vice President over the respiratory and home medical equipment division. Within her realm of responsibility is operational oversight of ventilation patient management, Home Medical Equipment services and delivery, Nutrition Services, Medical Supplies, and Revenue Qualification.
Becky’s clinical background as a respiratory therapist spans over 20 years, both in the Hospital and homecare sector. Her experience includes operations, sales, and hands on patient care. In these capacities she has a proven track record of improving efficiencies and meeting the ever changing healthcare landscape to provide optimal patient outcomes.
Prior to joining Barnes Healthcare services in 2010, Mrs. Pitts served in different capacities at American Home Patient, MediSTAT, Respiratory Health Services, Vencor Hospital and Bay Medical Center. In addition, she currently serves on the board of FAHCS (Florida Alliance of Homecare Services), a state association to promote and protect patient access to homecare.
Becky has an AS in Respiratory Care from Gulf Coast State College. She lives Panama City, FL with her husband and son.
